Montagu hosted the Mountain Mania trail runs and MTB races over the two days of April 27th and 28th. Tom and I entered the 55k MTB race on the Saturday, raced in ideal conditions, i.e. no wind, not too hot. The first climb was tough, a bit like Rusty Gate, but thereafter, it was not challenging technically and turned out to be something like a good training ride. Having said that, Tom creamed it in just over two and a half hours such that the organisers initially ignored his finish. Why? Because they could not believe he could have been over twenty minutes ahead of the second placed rider and they thought he must have taken a short cut. On realising this, Tom presented his monitor showing them his riding time and distance, and they then placed him first! That made the trip really worthwhile but overall, it was a rather disappointing race and the lack of single track was capped by the number of devil's thorns, and believe me, those thorns did their job and there were bikes everywhere with punctures after the race, including ours. Will give this one a miss next year!!
